Earth Day, an annual event, serves as a reminder of the challenges we face and the opportunities for impactful change toward a more sustainable future. This year’s theme is Planet vs Plastic, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to combat plastic pollution worldwide. Homeward Bound Projects leadership initiative is grounded in fostering global collaboration to shape a sustainable future, we recognise the pivotal role women, and non-binary individuals play in this global imperative. 🌍

Ximena Aguilar Vega

Our alumnae, with backgrounds in STEMM, embody the spirit of change makers. Among them include scientists dedicated to environmental issues with a focus on the plague of plastics. Plastic pollution transcends borders, affecting ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and advocacy, our Homeward Bound community are driving education and innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste. In our global network of inspiring women, let’s take a moment to recognise just a couple of these change makers and the impactful projects they lead.

Dr Denise Hardesty, [Team HB1], Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO, has been researching plastic pollution for the last decade. View this segment on plastic pollution, which aired on ABC Breakfast News. A world-first CSIRO study finds ocean floor is a ‘reservoir’ for plastic pollution.

Aaniyah Martin, [Facilitator Team HB7 & HB8]. Aaniyah focuses on work that connects people and nature. She has 15 years of experience in the conservation sector and is the Founder and Director of The Beach Co-op, which connects people, institutions and organisations through evidence-based education and experiential learning to keep South Africa’s beaches clean and healthy and to protect and enhance ocean health.

On this Earth Day, let us celebrate the resolute spirit of women change makers who are reshaping our relationship with the planet. 💚
